One of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Founding_Fathers_of_the_United_States\">Founding Fathers of the United States<\/a>, he authored the two most influential\npamphlets at the start of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Revolution\">American Revolution<\/a>&nbsp;and inspired the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patriot_(American_Revolution)\">patriots<\/a>&nbsp;in 1776 to declare independence\nfrom Britain.\n(Wikipedia)&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo argue with a man\nwho has renounced the use and authority of reason, and whose philosophy\nconsists in holding humanity in contempt, is like administering medicine to the\ndead, or endeavoring to convert an atheist by scripture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp; Paine came to the\nAmerican Colonies in 1774 at the urging of Ben Franklin, and fell in with the\nriff-raff who wanted to throw off the shackles of the English monarchy. He\nreveled in being a rebel, and wrote Common\nSense, heralded as the anthem\nof the revolutionary spirit in fledgling America. John Adams said, &#8220;Without the pen of the author of&nbsp;Common Sense, the sword of Washington would have been raised in\nvain&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp; He went to France\nduring the 1790s and helped foster the French Revolution by writing Rights of Man. He was vehemently critical of the status quo enjoyed by the\nauthoritarian regimes of Europe, and put fear in the hearts of England\u2019s ruling\nclass. He was tried and convicted in absentia\nof seditious libel by the\ngovernment of William Pitt, who was worried that the French Revolution might\ncross the channel and upset things a wee bit. So, he stayed in France and was\nelected to their National Convention, despite not being able to speak French.\nBut his advocacy for overthrowing oppressive governments led to his being\narrested and imprisoned in Paris, where he wrote The\nAge of Reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp; When he was released, he came back to America. Though this was the \u201cAge\nof Enlightenment\u201d, it was the time of paranoia for Thomas Paine. He mistakenly\nblamed George Washington for complicity in his arrest in France, and went on a smear\ncampaign to destroy Washington\u2019s reputation. He further alienated himself by\nbeing critical of Christianity, and organized religion as a whole. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; By the time he died\nat age 72 in Greenwich Village, New York City, he had fallen out of favor for\ntilting at a few too many windmills. Only six mourners attended his funeral.\nMany American newspapers carrying his obituary used the quote, &#8220;He had lived long, did some good, and much\nharm&#8221;.&nbsp; Finding a cemetery that would accept his\nbody was difficult, and he was buried on his farm. Later, an Englishman who was\nsympathetic to Paine\u2019s radical views dug up his remains with the intent of\nreturning them to a heroic burial in his homeland. Things fell apart and his\nremains became scattered, only to become the legends of celebrity bone-collectors.\nHis writings live on and he remains heavily quoted. His life may best be summed\nup by one of his more infamous citations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese are the times\nthat try men\u2019s souls.\u201d&nbsp; No doubt that in today\u2019s turbulent waters of political correctness he\nwould be deemed sexist.
