It’s 1960, and I am born. No experience. Call me Stupit.

I’ve worked all my life for other people. It’s 2015, and I have nothing to show for it. Except for my kids, which have nothing to do with working for other people – of being a cog in someone else’s machine.

The one thing I enjoyed most in all those years of working was writing. I just wasn’t able to do it enough to make it a full-time job. I helped write Employee Manuals and Job Descriptions, copy for brochures and other pre-internet promotional materials. I was a successful grant writer and really enjoyed writing the required reports. I even enjoyed posting items on Craigslist when I was in sales. I enjoyed it because it was thinking, and writing, and not just operating a piece of equipment or machinery.

Now, I’m looking at 2016 and beyond, and I want to have something to show. I knocked the dust off some old boxes of things I had written over 30 years ago in college, and a few other things since. I’m learning – painfully – how to build and flesh out a website so I have a place to post the old and the new. I want to write about what I know, what I’ve learned over the years working and trying to balance that with enjoying the time spent not working. I want to be able to look back from my death-bed and not have too many regrets.

To merely keep on slogging as a cog in a machine is a slow trudge to nothingness. I won’t have that. No! It’s time for something new, something completely different. The show is over as we know it and the stage curtain is drawn closed. Noise gels into music from the orchestra pit and the curtain flies open. People are still in their seats, raising lighted Bic lighters and yelling “Freebird!” What are you going to do?

It’s sometime in the future, and I am gone. No regrets. Call me Lucky.
